READissance:
A Rebirth of Reading

READissance is a reading incentive program that rewards students who read nine books per semester.  Once you read your nine books*, you become a member of the READissance Club and you are invited to a special luncheon just for READissance members.

When you read over nine books, you will be competing with your class for a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place prize with values of $30, $20, and $10.

Any BSHS student can participate.  READissance is voluntary and starts over each semester.

When you read a book, bring it by the Media Center and complete information on it.  The Media Specialists will give you a READissance card and keep a record of the books you are reading.

*Books may be either fiction or non-fiction and should be appropriate for your reading level.

We wish to thank Spartanburg School District Two School Board for their strong support of our READissance program.  They provided funds to put rolling carts filled with books in each of the  English II and III TP classrooms. Due to ready availability of these books, we have seen our program grow by leaps and bounds.

During our first year (2002-2003), 37 students read 7 or more books to participate in the program.   A total of 125,543 pages were read.

During the 2003-2004 year, 174 students read 7 or more books to participate in the program. A total of 387,595 pages were read.

During the 2004-2005 year, 185 students read 7 or more books to participate in the program. A total of 533,356 pages were read.

Some of our READissance members went to the food court at Westgate Mall for lunch one Thursday as part of their reward.
Check out these READissance ladies!

In March of 2004, we were blessed with a visit from YA author, Sharon Draper.  She made two large group presentations and then met with a select few English II classes who had studied two of her books.  Mrs. Draper was a dynamic speaker and her love of reading and young people shone through her presentations.

On April 15, 2005, YA author Carol Plum-Ucci visited us. She held informal question/answer sessions in the media center and welcomed students to email her with other questions that come to mind.  Several of our English III classes enjoy studying one or two of her books as part of their curriculum.
